ALCOHOL
What is alcohol?
The term "alcohol" has been synonymous with "spirituous" liquids for the past
300 years. The history of alcohol consumption, along with codes limiting its
consumption go back to 1700 B.C.
There are four types of alcohol:
methyl alcohol
ethyl alcohol
propyl alcohol
butyl alcohol
Ethyl Alcohol, or ethanol (C2H5OH), is the type used in the production of alcoholic
beverages. The other three types, methyl, propyl and butyl alcohol, if consumed can
result in blindness and death, even in relatively small doses.
Alcohol, or ethanol, is the intoxicating agent found in beer, wine and liquor. Alcohol
is produced by fermentation of yeast, sugars, and starches.1 Fruits such as grapes, and
grains like barley and wheat are most commonly used for wine, beer and liquors. Other
plants, such as the cactus or sugar cane may be used in liquor production.

general name alcohols.

SECTION 3
THE
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
ALCOHOL AND ETHANOL
The distinction between alcohol and ethanol is pretty simple. Ethanol,
or ethyl alcohol, is the only type of alcohol that you can drink without
seriously harming yourself, and then only if it hasn't been denatured or
doesn't contain toxic impurities.
Ethanol is sometimes called grain alcohol because it is the main type of
alcohol produced by grain fermentation.
Methanol and Isopropyl Alcohol
Other types of alcohol include methanol (methyl alcohol) and isopropanol
(rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol).

SECTION 4
WHAT IS
DENATURED
ALCOHOL?
Denatured alcohol is an altered form of ethanol that has been made
intentionally unpalatable or even poisonous. The purpose behind
adding these denaturing substances to ethanol is to prevent people
from consuming it. This can allow a government to levy fewer or no
taxes on the denatured alcohol than it does on ethanol intended for
human consumption.
Many different agents can be used to denature alcohol, and each
government has its own regulations about the acceptable formulas.
One of the main qualifications for selecting a denaturing agent
is that it should not be easily removed from the ethanol.

HOW TO
MAKE
ETHANOL FUEL
It's possible to make small batches of ethanol at home using ordinary
food items and a few basic pieces of equipment.
First, request written permission from your regional alcohol authority
to make sure it's legal for you to produce ethanol in your area.

SECTION 7
WHAT IS
ALCOHOL
STOVE FUEL?
Alcohol stove fuel comes
in two principal types:
ethanol
methanol
Ethanol (ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol) is what we consume in beer, wine,
and liquor. Pure ethanol burns the cleanest of any fuel, but is expensive
and hard to find.
Denatured alcohol (methylated spirits) is ethanol that has been rendered
undrinkable (and thus exempt from alcohol taxes) through the addition of
methanol and other chemicals.
When shopping for denatured alcohol, look for a minimum of potentially
toxic additives; versions sold as marine stove and lamp fuel are a good
bet. Avoid varieties that leave a solid residue after burning.
Methanol (methyl alcohol) is commonly used as gas-line antifreeze for
engines. Gas stations sell it under the brand name HEET.
Methanol contains 30 percent less energy than ethanol; you need more of
it to boil the same amount of water.
Methanol and denatured alcohols are toxic. Keep your stove and fuel
separate from your cookware to prevent contamination.

SECTION 8
CELLULOSIC
ETHANOL
Cellulosic ethanol, second-generation biofuel that is manufactured by converting
vegetation unsuitable for human consumption into ethyl alcohol (ethanol).
Whereas first-generation biofuels use edible feedstock such as corn (maize),
cellulosic ethanol can be produced by using raw materials such as wood, grass,
or nonedible plant parts. All biofuels are renewable, but cellulosic ethanol
has a lesser impact on the food chain than first-generation biofuels because
it can be produced from agricultural waste products or from energy crops grown
on lands that are only marginally useful for food production.
However, the conversion rate of raw materials to final product is lower for
cellulosic ethanol than for first-generation biofuels, and, without improvements
in manufacturing technology, the future of cellulosic ethanol may be as a fuel
additive rather than as a petroleum replacement.

SECTION 9
GROWING ENERGY
ON THE FARM
BIOMASS ENERGY
AND AGRICULTURE
Many farmers already produce biomass energy by growing corn to make ethanol.
But biomass energy comes in many forms. Virtually all plants and organic
wastes can be used to produce heat, power, or fuel.
Biomass energy has the potential to supply a significant portion of America's
energy needs, while revitalizing rural economies, increasing energy independence,
and reducing pollution. Farmers would gain a valuable new outlet for their products.
Rural communities could become entirely self-sufficient when it comes to energy,
using locally grown crops and residues to fuel cars and tractors and to heat and
power homes and buildings.
