COMMUNITY
DEVELOPMENT
CD
Community development (CD) is a broad
term applied to the practices and
academic disciplines of civic leaders,
activists, involved citizens and
professionals to improve various
aspects of local communities.
Community development seeks to empower
individuals and groups of people by
providing these groups with the skills
they need to affect change in their own
communities. These skills are often
concentrated around building political
power through the formation of large
social groups working for a common
agenda.
Community developers must understand
both how to work with individuals and
how to affect communities' positions
within the context of larger social
institutions.
A number of different approaches to
community development can be recognized,
including:
community economic
development (CED);
community capacity
building;
Social capital
formation;
political participatory
development;
nonviolent direct action;
ecologically sustainable
development;
asset-based community
development;
faith-based community
development;
community practice
social work;
community-based
participatory
research (CBPR);
Community Mobilization;
community empowerment;
community participation;
participatory planning
including community-based
planning (CBP);
community-driven
development (CDD);
approaches to funding
communities directly.

COMMUNITY
DEVELOPMENT
EXCHANGE
Community Development Exchange
defines community development
as:
“both an occupation (such as a community
development worker in a local authority)
and a way of working with communities.
Its key purpose is to build communities
based on justice, equality and mutual
respect.
Community development involves changing
the relationships between ordinary people
and people in positions of power, so that
everyone can take part in the issues that
affect their lives. It starts from the
principle that within any community there
is a wealth of knowledge and experience
which, if used in creative ways, can be
channelled into collective action to
achieve the communities' desired goals.
Community development practitioners work
alongside people in communities to help
build relationships with key people and
organisations and to identify common
concerns. They create opportunities for
the community to learn new skills and,
by enabling people to act together,
community development practitioners help
to foster social inclusion and equality.

COMMUNITY
STUDIES
Community studies is an academic field
drawing on both sociology and anthropology
and the social research methods of
ethnography and participant observation
in the study of community. In academic
settings around the world, community
studies is variously a sub-discipline of
anthropology or sociology, or an independent
discipline.
It is often interdisciplinary and geared
toward practical applications rather than
purely theoretical perspectives. Community
studies is sometimes combined with other
fields, i.e.,
"Urban and Community Studies,"
"Health and Community Studies,"
"Family and Community studies."
Community studies curricula are often
centered on the "concerns" of communities.
These include:
mental health,
physical health,
stress,
addiction,
AIDS,
racism,
immigration,
ethnicity,
gender,
identity,
sexuality,
the environment,
crime,
deviance,
delinquency,
family problems,
social competence,
poverty,
homelessness
other psyco-social aspects.
Understanding the socio-cultural completeness
and the anthropological ramifications of the
accurate analysis of community health is key
to the sphere of these studies.
Community studies have been linked to the
causes of social justice, promoting peace
and nonviolence and working towards social
change, often within an activist framework.

COMMUNITY
BUILDING
Community building is a field of practices
directed toward the creation or enhancement
of community among individuals within a
regional area (such as a neighborhood) or
with a common interest. It is sometimes
encompassed under the field of community
development.
A wide variety of practices can be utilized
for community building, ranging from simple
events like potlucks and small book clubs,
to larger–scale efforts such as mass
festivals and building construction projects
that involve local participants rather than
outside contractors.
Activists engaged in community building
efforts in industrialized nations see the
apparent loss of community in these
societies as a key cause of social
disintegration and the emergence of many
harmful behaviors.
They may see building community as a means
to increase social justice, individual
well-being and reduce negative impacts of
otherwise disconnected individuals.

COMMUNITY
RE-BUILDING
Leadership,
geography,
history,
socio-economic status
all are traditionally
used to explain success
of community and its
well-being.
a community's well-being is dependent on
the quality of relationships among the
citizens of that community.
While building a community, beliefs are
at the base of that community.
A few of those beliefs
are regarding:
ethics,
values,
spirituality,
human rights,
diversity.
While building upon those beliefs, learning
is necessary. This learning takes place
through team learning. Mental models must
be acknowledged, providing an arena for
creative tension.
Knowledge is gained through the collective.
Verbal, non-verbal communication can be
expressed through cultural, ritual, ceremony
and sharing of a community’s history.
Communication involves analytical intelligence.
Emotional intelligence made up of self-awareness,
self-regulation and motivation also are integral.
Using social intelligence to understand others,
provide leadership and engage in co-operation is
also needed.
With a sense of belonging developing, conversation,
possibilities, commitment, connection and loyalty
are sown. With caring, sustainability provides a
breeding ground for sacrifice and unselfishness.

CENTER
FOR
COMMUNITY
CHANGE
CCC
The Center for Community Change (CCC) is one
of the larger community building organizations in
the United States. It was founded in 1968 in
response to civil rights concerns of the 1960s.
Its purpose, according to its Web site, has
been "to help establish and develop community
organizations across the country, 'bring
attention to major national issues related to
poverty,' and 'help insure that government
programs are responsive to community needs.'"
The Center typically works in urban areas,
especially communities of color, and attempts
to form autonomous citizen-based groups to
work on local issues of concern.
The organization's "Leadership Directory"
has information on opportunities, such as
internships and training programs, in
several areas of making community and
national change, such as community
organizing, service learning, union
organizing, non-partisan electoral
engagement, and youth/student organizing.
The opportunities include those for youth
as well as experienced professionals.
