COMMUNICATION
Communication is the phenomenon of conveying information and meaning
through non-verbal, verbal, or written media.
Communication requires a sender, a message, a medium and a recipient,
although the receiver does not have to be present or aware of the
sender's intent to communicate at the time of communication; thus
communication can occur across vast distances in time and space.
Communication requires that the communicating parties share an area
of communicative commonality. The communication process is complete
once the receiver understands the sender's message.
Discursive communication three primary steps:
Thought:
First, information exists in the mind of the sender.
This can be a concept, idea, information, or feeling.
Encoding:
Next, a message is sent to a receiver in words or
other symbols.
Decoding:
Finally, the receiver translates the words or symbols
into a concept or information that a person can understand.
There are a range of verbal and non-verbal forms of communication. These
include body language, eye contact, sign language, haptic communication,
and chronemics.
Other examples are media content such as pictures, graphics, sound, and
writing. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities also
defines the communication to include the display of text, Braille,
tactile communication, large print, accessible multimedia, as well as
written and plain language, human-reader, augmentative and alternative
modes, means and formats of communication, including accessible
information and communication technology. Feedback is a critical
component of effective communication.

COMMUNICATION
ACTIVITIES
The ability to communicate effectively is important to your success
both personally and professionally. How you interact with others
begins with your body language, listening skills and non-verbal cues.
Learning how to facilitate effective communication through activities,
such as team-building, can help you to develop those skills. And you
don't necessarily need to spend money in order to perfect the art of
communication. There are some free activities that will enhance how
you communicate.
One-on-Ones
Sit down face-to-face. Whether you need time with your boss, your spouse
or your child, scheduling regular one-on-one time is one of the best and
most effective ways to encourage routine communication. The one-to-one
should be viewed as a safe forum in which to communicate with one other
person. It doesn’t matter where you meet or for how long, so long as it
is a comfortable, safe and quiet atmosphere, apart from any outside
distractions, that allows for effective listening. Whether you meet daily,
weekly or monthly, the one-to-one helps to develop two-way communication
on an ongoing basis.
Written Communication
Nearly lost is the great art of written communication, including the ancient
art of letter-writing. More often than not, words are best expressed in the
form of a letter, penned from the heart. Taking the time to write a good memo
or letter allows you to sit down and carefully compose your thoughts onto
paper. It also allows for rewrites.
It is all in the name of effective communication. There will always be a time
to have the face-to-face conversation. There will come times, however, when
it’s best for you to stake your communication efforts in the form of a
well-thought-out memo or letter. And if you really hope to make it effective,
hand-deliver or "snail mail" it, rather than send it off in an email.
Team-Building Activities
Build stronger relationships through creative team-building activities.
Whether you hold regular team-building activities with your coworkers,
your friends or your family, simple exercises in communication can help
to strengthen interpersonal relationships. And although advancing
technology offers many communication advantages with the help of email,
cellphones, chat rooms, texting and networking sites, it fails to connect
people at a far deeper, more human level. And in order to be successful,
people need to communicate effectively face-to-face. Team-building
activities are a fun and effective way to achieve better communication.
Board Games
Take out the board games. It may sound old-fashioned, but one of the simplest
and most fun ways to get people to communicate is to play board games. Whether
it’s with your coworkers on your lunch hour or with your family after dinner,
the truth is everyone has a competitive side and nothing brings out people’s
base need to communicate like a little friendly competition.
You would be surprised at the conversations that come out when people’s guards
are down. Next time you have some friends or coworkers over, take out a board
game and let the effective communicating begin.
