DENTISTRY
Dentistry is a branch of medicine that is involved in the study, diagnosis,
prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral
cavity, commonly in the dentition but also the oral mucosa, and of adjacent
and related structures and tissues, particularly in the maxillofacial (jaw
and facial) area. Although primarily associated with teeth among the
general public, the field of dentistry or dental medicine is not limited to
teeth but includes other aspects of the craniofacial complex including the
temperomandibular and other supporting structures.

TIPS
Keeping Your Entire Mouth Healthy
Brushing your teeth should be done at least twice a day. Brushing
should be done gently and slowly with a soft brush. Force and a
hard brush can hurt your gums and damage tooth enamel. Each brushing
session should take around two minutes.
Flossing: Once a day, use dental floss or a small interdental brush
to clean between your teeth. This enables you to remove hard to reach
debris and plaque.
Clean your tongue: Work from as far back as possible towards the front.
Using a soft toothbrush or tongue scraper, clean the entire surface of
your tongue gently, and then rinse your mouth. This will also help for
bad breath.
Watch What Goes in Your Mouth
Avoid sugary or acidic foods when possible. Bacteria which cause tooth
decay and erosion thrive on these sorts of food. If you do eat them,
rinse your mouth with water or brush your teeth as soon as possible.
Give up smoking: Smoking and tobacco use has been shown to cause dental
problems and contribute to oral cancer and tooth loss through gum disease.
Watch for Potential Problems
Be observant at all times. Check regularly that your gums are pink and hug
the teeth. Notice if there is any bleeding or pain when you brush your teeth.
Common Dental Problems
Cavities or holes in your teeth are caused by decay eating away the enamel on
your teeth, while Gum Erosion involves the enamel being worn down by acid in
our food and drink. Erosion can cause pain as well as weaken the tooth structure
resulting in fracturing or tooth loss.
Gum disease or periodontal disease causes your gums to swell, bleed or become
tender as they become infected. Early diagnosis is important as gum disease can
result in tooth loss and damage to the bones which support them.
Bad Breath or halitosis can be more than just embarrassing or an indication of
poor oral hygiene, a bad diet or smoking. It can also be a sign of gum disease
or other health problems.
Reduced saliva flow, or dry mouth, affects the mouth’s tooth-washing function
which tries to clean away debris and bacteria after you eat. A dry mouth can
result from certain diseases, medications or smoking and tobacco use. It can
cause a persistent sore throat, swallowing difficulties, dry nasal passages
and hoarseness.
Tooth sensitivity is usually triggered by hot or cold temperature or sweetness.
Brushing and flossing may also cause sensitivity. Using fluoride toothpaste
helps strengthen the enamel and special toothpastes are available for sensitive
teeth.
