EDIBLE
LANDSCAPING
Edible landscaping is the use of food producing plants in
a constructed landscape in aesthetically pleasing designs.
These designs can be incorporate any garden style and can
include any number of edible species.
Some Advantages of having an Edible Landscape
To include unusual varieties of fruits and
vegetables that are not available in stores
Save on grocery bills.
To increase the food security of your household.
To get outside together and interact with each
other and the natural world.
Space: Limited lot size and smaller homesteads
restricts your ability to plant separate elaborate
gardens. Edible landscapes take advantage of dual
purpose roles to increase space efficiency.

CREATING
AN
EDIBLE
ELANDSCAPE
Edible landscaping is not a new concept, but has been out of favor with
many traditional landscape plans for some years. In recent years, due
to the convergence of several garden and landscape trends, edible
landscaping is enjoying a comeback.
Historically, lawns were cultivated in Europe as a visible demonstration
of their owner's wealth and power. Lawns showed that the owner of this
property could spare the energy necessary to maintain such a display.
Jump ahead to the world wars, when Americans were encouraged to "do their
part" by growing food on their own property. Called "war gardens" or
"Victory Gardens," by the end of WWII, more than 80 percent of American
households were growing at least some of their own food.
Then came peace, introduction of the leisure weekend, production of industrial
pesticides, the availability of the lawnmower to homeowners, and by the '50s
the stage was set for the American lawn/landscape we know today.

THE 8
BEST PLANTS
FOR
EDIBLE
LANDSCAPING
The idea of creating an edible landscape is very appealing. How
wonderful would it be to have a snack at hand, anywhere in your
yard? It sounds like the perfect solution for gardeners with
limited space and many vegetables are as attractive as so-called
ornamental plants.
The real caveat is finding vegetables that can survive outside of
a fenced-in vegetable garden fortress. Humans are no alone in their
enjoyment of pea tendrils and the luscious scent of tomatoes. Deer,
squirrels, groundhogs, rabbits and lots of other critters know no
boundaries when it comes to foraging. If you like to experiment with
edible landscaping, start with some of these vegetables. They are
not overly appealing to wildlife and if you interplant them among
plants with scratchy textures and repellent scents, the hungry
wildlife might just avoid them.
