HELP
Help is a non-profit organization whose goal
is to help seniors make the right choices for
their financial future as well as for their
health care. The organization also provides
assistance for the families of senior citizens.
It accomplishes this through education.
With education, you or your parent can make good
choices. Unfortunately, seniors are often the
target of scams. H.E.L.P. provides you with the
tools to recognize legitimate claims and offers.

SENIOR
CITIZEN
SERVICES
INFORMATION
Numerous organizations and agencies provide
services specifically designed to meet the
needs of senior citizens. Resources are often
available throughout the nation, and include
services such as housing, healthcare, personal
counseling and education assistance.
The Senior Citizen Services Community
Non-profit organizations, churches, community
groups and state and government agencies provide
senior-specific services. These groups have
different qualifications and other limitations
for recipients. Some groups provide multiple
services while others focus on a single type of
assistance.
Potential services include:
•Housing and home care:
This type of assistance may come in the form of
assisted living units, home nursing care, meal
delivery, transportation or companionship.
•Entertainment:
This category includes groups that host group
activities such as craft or sporting events,
socials, outings to cultural sites and dining
excursions. Groups may also provide one-on-one
activities of these same types.
•Continuing education:
Assistance in this area tends to provide specialized
learning opportunities for seniors. Opportunities may
take the form of classes, lectures or trips to nearby
cultural areas. Some groups may assist seniors with
earning a GED or college degree.
•Specialized services:
This category refers to services that may only be
available at specific points during the year.
Examples include free tax preparation services,
medical screening tests or holiday celebrations.
•Legal and professional advice:
These services often provide assistance with
preparing wills, advance directives, powers of
attorneys, conducting real estate transactions
or establishing a financial portfolio.

HOW TO
GET
GOVERNMENT
ASSISTANCE
FOR
ELDERLY
The Elderly have their hands full trying to maintain
a good standard of living with the financial resources
they have available. The government understands the
plight of the Elderly household.
Programs for food, medical, financial support and
housing assistance are available. This article will
explore the available Government Assistance Programs
further and where to go to apply.
Instructions
1. Each State in the United States dedicates funds
for the individual counties to delegate to meet the
financial needs of the residents. With these monies
the counties offer financial assistance per
demonstration of the participants of financial need.
Each county has a Department of Health and Human
Services located in the County Seat. Your local phone
book will have the contact information listed in the
front under county offices.
Financial Services are received following an application
and assessment process. The application can be completed
independently at home and mailed in to the County offices
or completed in an appointment with an employee of the
County. The process can be expedited by supplying all
requested documentation with the initial application
submission.
2. A person never knows when a crisis will develop.
In view of the high cost of medical insurance in
combination with confusing rules and regulations many
Elderly Households choose to gamble by carrying no
health coverage.
The Government recognizes the benefit in the investment
in the health of the Countries residents by providing
access to proactive health care as well as long term.
Medical Assistance is available from the Department of
Human Services as an entitlement program.
The application which is filled out for Financial
Assistance is also the application for Medical
Assistance. In a simple step of adding a check mark
in a box the applicant is considered for Medical
coverage. Most states have provisions to ensure all
elderly have some form of health insurance and access
to medication.
If an individuals earnings are above the requirement
for the entitlement program there may be a deductible
for the coverage.
3. Also available from the Department of Human
Services is food stamps. Once again the same
application as financial assistance serves for
food stamps. With a check mark, the case will
be reviewed for meeting the requirements for
food programs.
Many counties offer meals for elderly also. These
programs are managed by the county as a meal site
which will provide a hot meal for elderly residents
or in some counties a home delivered meal. These
programs are available as an entitlement for elderly
individuals with a suggested donation to assist in
covering costs. Food programs such as these allow
for financial resources to cover other needs without
the sacrifice of diet.
4. Along with a roof over the head and food in the
stomach, a person needs to have heat to warm the
house. Once again the application filled out for
your resident County can give you access to Energy
Assistance.
This is an emergency fund where the County can give
assistance to individuals in danger of losing heat
and electricity services.
5. The Department of Housing and Urban Development,
also referred to as HUD, offers two entitlement
programs for households which meet financial
guidelines. The first program is Low Income Housing.
These units are usually in the form of an apartment
building or community of buildings which are owned
by HUD where the rent is offered at a subsidized rate.
The second program is Section Eight Housing. This
program usually has a considerable waiting list
involved.
The program participant finds an apartment of interest.
With the agreement of the landlord, the consumer pays
for a portion of the rent with HUD paying the remaining
portion. The rent does need to be "reasonable" in
meeting the specifications of the program. These programs
are accessed by contacting the local HUD office and
completing an application. Your counties Department of
Human Services can assist in providing the contact number.
Tips & Warnings
Entitlement programs are open to anyone who meets the
financial guidelines. The programs are available to
assist people in need. If you are in need then apply.
When applying for services maintain a copy of your
application for future reference. Reviews are
conducted which require the application to be completed
and resubmitted annually. Your former application can
serve as a cheat sheet for future applications.
Everyone needs assistance at some time in their life.
Don't allow pride to prevent you from accessing programs
created to assist you through this time in your life.
