FOOD SCAPING
Foodscaping, sometimes called edible landscaping or front yard farming,
is a type of landscaping in which all or major areas of a lawn on private
property or sometimes public property are used to grow food. It has been
considered as a hybrid between farming and landscaping in the sense of
having an "all-encompassing way of growing a garden, feeding yourself,
and making it look pretty"[1] with an "integrative landscape". Grass and
shrubberies are replaced with berry bushes or other plants which yield
fruits and vegetables which can mean lower bills at the grocery store.
In contrast to having a backyard vegetable garden or raised bed for
flowers or other enclosed or fenced-in space where fruits and vegetables
are grown, foodscaping is more extensive, with "implementation of edible
foods into the landscape."

TIPS
Focus on the sunniest areas since most vegetables prefer sun.
Start by planting edibles, such as arugula, basil, garlic and
lettuce, along the edges of landscape beds. Peanuts and potatoes
make good edgers, too.
Plant garlic to deter ground mammals, such as voles.
Repurpose underutilized beds by sowing seeds directly in the soil.
Plant vegetables and herbs in the landscape to support bio-diversity
of the ornamental plants.
Experiment with sun-loving flowering shrubs (hydrangea, viburnum,
forsythia) as “live stakes” for tall tomato plants.

A NEW WAY TO
CREATE A GARDEN
With manicured lawns and perfectly trimmed shrubs, the landscaping
surrounding North American homes and buildings was, until recently,
mostly considered decorative. However, a new way of designing gardens,
particularly appreciated by millennials, has just made its appearance:
foodscaping!
A Functional, Ecological
and Productive Garden
The principle of foodscaping is simple because it involves designing
gardens in which edible plants are grown. By making your own edible
landscaping, you will be able to create a functional and ecological
living environment that will allow you to produce organic, fresh,
tasty and inexpensive food!
Nut trees, fruit trees and shrubs, perennial or tropical vegetables,
herbs, edible flowers and medicinal plants; any of these has its place
in edible landscaping. They have the ability to produce vegetables and
fruits in abundance, year after year, with little maintenance. As it
is the case for permaculture, edible landscaping is also a sustainable
ecosystem that respects living creatures in which interventions are
minimal.
