SECTION 1
FUNGUS
A fungus, fungi, or funguses is any member of the group of eukaryotic
organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and molds, as
well as the more familiar mushrooms. These organisms are classified as
a kingdom, Fungi, which is separate from the other eukaryotic life
kingdoms of plants and animals.

TYPES
OF
FUNGI
Basidiomycetes and Ascomycetes
Fungi with sporophores (fruiting bodies) large enough to be
readily visible will usually belong to one of two main groups.
The Basidiomycetes or the Ascomycetes. The main difference
between these two groups is in the way in which they produce
their microscopic spores.
In the Basidiomycetes, the spores are produced externally, on
the end of specialised cells called basidia.
In Ascomycetes, spores are produced internally, inside a sac
called an ascus.

SECTION 4
TYPES OF
FUNGAL
DISEASES
Fungi are everywhere. There are approximately 1.5 million different
species of fungi on Earth, but only about 300 of those are known to
make people sick.1,2 Fungal diseases are often caused by fungi that
are common in the environment. Fungi live outdoors in soil and on
plants and trees as well as on many indoor surfaces and on human skin.
Most fungi are not dangerous, but some types can be harmful to health.

SECTION 5
FUNGI
HAZARDS
AND
HEALTH
APPLICATIONS
Fungi exist throughout the environment. Some of them are useful,
for example as food or as the basis of medication. Others are
less desirable, such as mold on food, or spores that cause
diseases.
Neither plants nor animals, fungi belong to a group of their own.
There are about 99,000 known species of fungal organisms, including
yeasts, rusts, smuts, mildews, molds, and mushrooms.
Fungi are found in almost any habitat, including the International
Space Station (ISS), where they were found to decompose food, with
some spores surviving 5 months in microgravity.
Many live on the land, mainly in soil or on plant material. They
are one of the most widely distributed organisms on the Earth.

SECTION 6
CLASSIFICATION
OF
FUNGI
The kingdom Fungi contains five major phyla that were established
according to their mode of sexual reproduction or using molecular
data. Polyphyletic, unrelated fungi that reproduce without a sexual
cycle, are placed for convenience in a sixth group called a “form
phylum.” Not all mycologists agree with this scheme. Rapid advances
in molecular biology and the sequencing of 18S rRNA (a part of RNA)
continue to show new and different relationships between the various
categories of fungi.
The five true phyla of fungi are
the Chytridiomycota (Chytrids),
the Zygomycota (conjugated fungi),
the Ascomycota (sac fungi),
the Basidiomycota (club fungi)
Phylum Glomeromycota.
The Deuteromycota is an informal group of unrelated fungi that all share
a common character – they use strictly asexual reproduction.
