GARDEN
DESIGN
Garden design is the art and process of designing and creating plans
for layout and planting of gardens and landscapes. Garden design may
be done by the garden owner themselves, or by professionals of varying
levels of experience and expertise. Most professional garden designers
have some training in horticulture and the principles of design, and
some are also landscape architects, a more formal level of training
that usually requires an advanced degree and often a state license.
Amateur gardeners may also attain a high level of experience from
extensive hours working in their own gardens, through casual study,
serious study in Master Gardener Programs, or by joining gardening
clubs.

SECTION 2
PRINCIPLES OF
DESIGN FOR GARDENS
AND LANDSCAPE
Good garden design is achieved when the principles of design are
followed. The principles are described and explained below.
Keep the basic principles of design in mind throughout the whole
garden design process. Get a good feel for the principles. See if
you can identify them in gardens. This will make you aware of
endless possibilities for you own garden design.
Illusion
Optical illusion is used to change the perceived appearance of a
garden. Small gardens can be made to look larger, narrow spaces
wider, long distances shorter, etc.
To create a feeling of space, keep the pattern lines simple. Repeat
the architectural lines close to your house. Finally, use flowing
lines further away. Sometimes a hidden mirror can also add depth
to your garden design.
Balance
Formal balance is created using a mirror image along a vertical plan.
Informal balance is achieved by one part of the composition having an
equivalent mass to another part. For example a large planting of shrubs
may be required on one side of your garden to balance a large tree on
the other side.
Unity
Create unity in your garden design by repeating patterns and plant
materials.
Proportion
Stick to the scale suitable for your garden. Small gardens can only
accommodate shrubs and maybe one small tree, while a large garden
could have many large trees.
Form
Different forms create different effects in your garden design. If
round pots are in your design, echo their shape in the shrubs, etc.
Create different visual and emotional experiences with the forms you
use. Form has sub principles of design, e.g. vertical, horizontal,
spike, round and pendulous forms.
Vertical slim forms, elegantly act as exclamation marks! Plants with
flat tops have horizontal forms and draw your eyes from side to side.
Use plants with strong and dynamic stems (spike form) as focal points
in your garden design. Round forms will stop the eye in the landscape.
A weeping, pendulous form will retain attention within a space.
Texture
Texture is used to create different effects in the garden design. Plants
with large leaves provide a coarse texture. This creates a lush effect.
Plants with shiny leathery leaves create a hard texture. Soft texture
plants have small fine leaves. Medium texture is anything in between.
Color
Color can provide the most interesting effects. Plants can be grouped
together to create large splashes of color. You can blend and harmonise
different colors to create a pleasing effect. Using different colours
of green foliage can create a very interesting backdrop to bright colours.
Color is used to manipulate moods to create a very interesting and visually
pleasing garden. Think of the color on an artist’s pallet, the possibilities
to create a masterpiece are endless. Of all the principles of design, color
has the most dramatic effect if executed correctly.

TIPS FOR
DESIGNING A
GARDEN PLAN
Before you start planting, you need to create a garden plan. Start by
using graph paper and drawing a plan of your garden site to scale. Plot
every feature you find on your site, both natural and those you or your
predecessors have put in place. Use a measuring tape to get approximate
measurements. You may also want to indicate areas of sun and shade.
After you’ve completed the initial drawing of your yard or garden plot,
you can move forward and add the elements for your garden plan. Here are
some recommendations:
Gather any pictures you’re using for inspiration, and prepare a list of
your main goals, assets, and limitations.
Study your current plan carefully and decide which features you want to
incorporate into your final plan, which ones you want to highlight, and
which ones you want to downplay or remove.
Place a piece of tracing paper over your plan and sketch in or leave out
various features and designs.
TIP
When designing your garden plan, you don’t have to get bogged down in
details, listing every plant by name. Instead, “sun-loving perennials,”
“blue and yellow bed,” or “pots of annuals” may suffice.
With your sketched yard in hand, your next step is to decide which area
you want to start with and to roll up your sleeves. Break big projects
down into manageable pieces, and do them one at a time.
Like rooms in a house, a garden area has four major elements. And as in
building a house, going from the ground up is best. Tackle the four major
elements in this order:
Floor:
Lawn grass, a groundcover, paving materials, or good, plantable soil
Walls:
Supplied literally by a wall of your house; by a fence, hedge, or trellis;
or by backdrop of evergreens or shrubs of some kind
Ceiling:
Can certainly be open sky but may also involve an umbrella, awnings, overarching
tree or large-shrub branches, or a pergola with or without a cloak of plants
Furniture:
Tables and chairs and benches and the like, but also major containers or garden
ornaments and décor
REMENBER
Don’t go overboard with garden gnomes and pink flamingos. Limit yourself to one
or two ornaments and keep the focus on the sense of space and the living parts
of your garden.

TYPES
OF
GARDENS
Specific types of gardens can be born out of necessity, or a design theme
can offer inspiration and guidance.
Sometimes a landscape is defined by a need or requirement, such as a vegetable
garden or an accessible garden. Or a homeowner may simply want a certain look.
Many themes are culturally historic and very well defined, such as traditional
Italian or Japanese gardens. They have been used for centuries in a particular
culture and are easily identified.
Other themes are newer, less defined, and although they have identifiable
characteristics, they tend to have several variations.
For example, a minimalist garden can be different forms or types, including
formal, informal, urban, tropical, or desert.
