GHETTO
A ghetto is a part of a city predominantly occupied by a particular ethnic group that may be
looked down upon for various reasons, especially because of social or economic issues, or
because they have been forced to live there (e.g. the Jewish Ghettos in Europe).
The term was originally used in Venice derived from the word Borghetto, meaning Little Borgo,
a cluster of homes and buildings often outside Italian city walls, to describe the area where
Jews, tradespeople or agricultural workers were compelled to live. In rural Italy, Borghetto
is not necessarily a pejorative term. In modern context, the term ghetto now refers to an
overcrowded urban area often associated with specific ethnic or racial populations living below
the poverty line. Crime rates in ghettoes are typically higher than in other parts of the city.
Dictionaries list a number of possible origins for the originally Italian term, including "gheto"
or "ghet", which means slag or waste in Venetian, and was used in this sense in a reference to a
foundry where slag was stored located on the same island as the area of Jewish confinement (the
Venetian Ghetto), and borghetto, diminutive of borgo ‘borough’

RURAL
GHETTO
The term rural ghetto was coined by Osha Gray Davidson in the book Broken Heartland:
The Rise of America's Rural Ghetto and is used to describe the influx of poverty and
neglect in the small towns of Midwestern and Southeastern United States that occurs.
According to an April, 1993 review of the book by Fred Magdoff, rural ghettos are often
"omitted from most people's conception of poverty." For one thing, "rural poverty is
less visually dramatic than urban poverty--poorly insulated mobile homes and weather-
beaten single family houses look almost quaint compared to urban tenements." Magdoff
goes on to point out the reality of poverty in rural areas does not fit a common
conception of idyllic farms.
Some of the trends driving the rural ghetto phenomenon:
A speculation-driven bubble in land prices.
A push by agricultural officials to have farmers produce as much grain as possible,
the "fence row to fence row" mandate.
The bank crisis, partially caused by banks pushing too-easy-to-get credit on both farm
and non-farm businesses.
The decline in the number of non-farm jobs and the increase of low-paying service-sector
jobs.
The opening of large malls on the outskirts of towns.
Reagan-era reduction in farm aid to states, cities and towns when aid was most needed.
In contrast to urban areas and inner-city neighborhoods, most of the "rural ghettos" are
mostly white, though a large number of predominantly black towns in the Southern U.S. fit
this particular profile. Jackson County, Kentucky in the Appalachia region was featured on
an April 2009 segment on ABC news program 20/20 about rural poverty.
Also to note, many Indian Reservations, home to Native Americans such as Pine Ridge and
Standing Rock, South Dakota, and Hispanic-majority farm towns known as colonias (barrio),
most notably in South Texas and Central California, are referred to as "rural ghettos".
Often these areas are isolated geographically from main economic centers.

HOOCHIE
COOCHIE
The hoochie coochie was a sexually provocative belly dance that originated at the
Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876.[1] It became wildly popular during and
after the Chicago World's Fair in 1893.[2] Described by the New York Journal in 1893
as "Neither dancing of the head nor the feet",[3] it was a belly dance performed by
women of (or presented as having) an Eastern European gypsy heritage, often as part
of travelling "sideshows". Gooch, goochie or gootchie was apparently already a
Southern US term for a woman's vagina, and hoochie coochie has been suggested as
referring directly to sex.
Since the dance was performed by women, a "goochie man" (or "hoochie coochie man")
either watched them or ran the show. Alternatively, from the directly sexual meaning
of goochie goochie, he was successful with women. This inspired the classic blues song
"Hoochie Coochie Man", written by Willie Dixon for Muddy Waters, and covered by numerous
musicians since. The dance was still popular at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition: the
World's Fair of 1904, but had all but disappeared by the Second World War; the song was
therefore harking back to an earlier "golden" era.

HOOCHIE
MAMA
A woman who dresses very loud and provocative (often low class- does not take care
of herself very well) She is also associated with being promiscuous.
According to the Urban Dictionary:
'Couchie is adapted from the French word coucher for "to go to bed" (like our word
"couch", which you can lie down on). And around the turn of the century in really
gritty clubs and circuses (and for a long time after that) women who danced
suggestively rolling their hips were "hootchie coutchie" dancers, or dancing the
"hootchie coochie".

HOOCHIE
MAMA
A female who dresses ghetto ho fabulous. Lots of gold, lots of weave-typically Pattie
LaBelle style with red, purple, gold, or orange streaks, and long nails with lots of
airbrush glitter, and color. This female's goal in life is to use her female attriibutes
to obtain a male with lots of money or any money to spend on her. Weaves, rent, & diapers
for her baby from another daddy included.
A ghetto version of a "Gold Digger".
Couchie is adapted from the French word coucher for "to go to bed" (like our word "couch",
which you can lie down on). And around the turn of the century in really gritty clubs and
circuses (and for a long time after that) women who danced suggestively rolling their hips
were "hootchie coutchie" dancers, or dancing the "hootchie coochie".
These women were not considered morally upright in the general public, so calling a woman
a hootchie cooch was calling her a tramp, especially if dressed in a way that is meant to
be provocative and showy. Hootchie mama is a variation on this term. (And could get you
beat down if you call a woman that.)
