NOT-FOR-PROFIT
ORGANIZATION
NON-PROFIT
ORGANIZATION
NPO
A non-profit organization, NPO, also known
as a not-for-profit organization is an
organization that does not distribute its
surplus funds to owners or shareholders,
but instead uses them to help pursue its
goals.
Examples of NPOs
include charities
charitable organizations,
trade unions,
public arts organizations.
Most governments and government agencies
meet this definition, but in most
countries they are considered a separate
type of organization and not counted as
NPOs.
They are in most countries exempt from
income and property taxation.

SECTION 2
NOT-FOR-PROFIT
NON-PROFIT
DISTINCTION
Ownership is
the quantitative
difference
between
for-profit and
not-for-profit
organizations.
For-profit organizations can be privately
owned and may re-distribute taxable wealth
to employees and shareholders.
By contrast, not-for-profit organizations
do not have owners. They have controlling
members or boards, but these people cannot
sell their shares to others or personally
benefit in any taxable way.
While they are able to earn a profit, more
accurately called a surplus, such earnings
must be retained by the organization for
its self-preservation, expansion and future
plans. Earnings may not benefit individuals
or stake-holders.

SECTION 3
LEGAL
ASPECTS
There is a wide diversity of structures
and purposes in the NPO landscape.
For legal classification and eventual
scrutiny, there are, nevertheless, some
structural elements of prime legal
importance:
Economic activity
Supervision and management
provisions
Representation
Accountability and Auditing
provisions
Provisions for the amendment
of the statutes or articles
of incorporation
Provisions for the dissolution
of the entity
Tax status of corporate and
private donors
Tax status of the foundation

SECTION 4
WHAT
IS
A
NON-PROFIT
GRANT?
Non profit grants are, to be simple, funding
from certain individuals or organizations to
your organization for non profit purposes.
This is the main difference between a non
profit grant proposal and a proposal for
investment capital. The latter aims to use
the money funded to make more money, while
the former aims to use the money funded to
reach the objectives of the non profit
organization.
What’s a non profit grant proposal?
A Non profit grant proposal is, to be simple
once again, a written document requesting
non profit grants from a certain individual
or organization.
It basically outlines the objectives of your
organization, how it matches or coincides
with the objectives of the funding party,
the plans on how you’ll go about achieving
that objective and other relevant information
about your non profit organization.
What do I get out of it?
Of course, the most important gains you’ll
have from getting a non profit grant is the
money. Other than that, you build up social
and professional networks with the party
that’s funding your organization.
Plus you get more social awareness of your
organization, as the funding party will
then support your organization. The bigger
the profile of the funding party, the
bigger the non profit grant’s “advertising
effect” is for your organization.
What are my responsibilities?
The most important responsibility you’ll
have to bear when you’re given a non profit
grant is to provide a way of showing the
funding party you’re able to meet your
objectives.
You could even take it one step further
and bring yourselves to exceed the
objectives you initially set when you
requested the grant.
You’d better prove that you’re able to
solve world hunger if that’s what your
organization’s all about. Otherwise,
you may have the really nasty experience
of having your funding pulled out from
under your feet.

FUNDRAISING
FUND
RAISING
HOWTO
How to Fund Raise Effectively
for a Nonprofit Organization.
You've got a great cause, but you need the
funds to back it up. A solid plan, a little
"know how," and a strong work ethic will get
you on your way.
Instructions.
1. Assess the needs and goals of your
non-profit organization. What do you
want to accomplish?
2. Review the federal and state limitations
set for non-profit fundraising.
3. Review your existing fundraising programs.
Assess their strengths and weaknesses.
4. Brainstorm for original fundraising ideas.
One-of-a-kind ideas attract a lot of attention.
5. Decide if you want to solicit funds
face-to-face, through mailers, by phone,
online, through special events, or through
a combination of these.
6. Cultivate existing relationships. A
well-known saying says "fundraising is
not raising funds, it's raising friends."
7. Solicit large corporations for
philanthropic funds through their
public relations department. Think
like a business when approaching
corporations.
8. Solicit funds from corporations
that are moving to the area and want
to establish a "presence."
9. Solicit donations of equipment and
supplies from local companies. Even
food or flowers can be obtained for
small events.
10. Consider establishing a partnership
with a local corporation. Determine what
your organization might be able to offer
the company, then contact their marketing
department.
11. Seek government grants and donations.
12. Consider hosting special events.
Considerable expenses are involved,
and profits may be minimal, but events
generate visibility and name recognition.
13. Contact all local media before your
special event. Advertise as much as you
can.
14. Continue fundraising until you have
a base-level of cash flow. Future
fundraisers can build on that foundation.
