HEMP
OIL
Hemp oil is an oil extracted from the hemp plant. All plants in the
Cannabis genus can produce the oil, but usually only industrial hemp
is used to make hemp oil. Industrial hemp is a hemp varietal which
has been cultivated specifically for industrial production, and it
has a minimum of the psychoactive substances associated with the genus,
most notably THC. Hemp oil is typically almost free of THC, and it has
no psychoactive properties.

SECTION 2
WHAT IS
HEMP SOAP?
Hemp soap generally contains hemp oil, either as its base or as one of its
main ingredients. The essential fatty acids in hemp are said to be beneficial
for the skin. They are said to help support skin health and slow the signs of
aging. Hemp oil may also be useful in preventing acne. The oil derived from
hemp plants is also considered a powerful moisturizer, and hemp soap is often
recommended for dry skin.
Unlike many other types of plant oils, hemp oil is said to contain a high ratio
of omega-3 fatty acids to omega-6 fatty acids. While both types of essential
fatty acids are generally considered beneficial to health, omega-3 fatty acids
are considered very valuable for their anti-inflammatory properties. Hemp oil
typically contains three times as many omega-3 fatty acids as omega-6 fatty
acids. When applied to the skin in the form of hemp soap, these fatty acids can
help ease the inflammation of acne. They can also slow the oxidation caused by
free radicals, to help skin maintain a youthful appearance.
The oils in hemp plants are considered light enough for daily skin care. Many
hemp soap products contain a mixture of plant oils considered beneficial for
skin health, such as grapeseed oil or almond oil. Some soap makers believe
using hemp oil as a soap base can overwhelm the skin, leaving it oily, so hemp
soap typically contains a relatively small amount of the oil.
Hemp plants have been considered valuable for a number of purposes throughout
history. Their seeds are generally rich in complete proteins, and are considered
easier to digest than some other sources of vegetable protein. Hemp seeds also
contain large amounts of vitamin E and other minerals such as iron, potassium,
and zinc. When ingested, the seeds are said to provide a number of health benefits.
They may support immune health and cardiac function, as well as helping to prevent
inflammatory and age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and arthritis.
The fibers of the hemp plant have long been used to weave durable rope and fabric,
and they are still used to make rope today. The seeds have been used as a folk remedy
for cancerous lesions. Some believe that hemp may be one of the oldest crops cultivated
by humans. The oldest piece of hemp fabric ever discovered is believed to date back to
about 8,000 BCE.

HOW TO
MAKE HEMP
SHAMPOO & SOAP
Recognized as one of the most versatile plants on earth, hemp is grown and
harvested for its fiber, seeds and oil. It is used to make clothing, food,
paper, coffee, vitamin supplements, soaps and creams. And because of the
extraordinary balanced ratio of omega-3, omega-6 and gamma linolenic acid,
hemp is believed to offer healing, soothing and strengthening benefits to
skin and hair. Try these recipes for hemp oil soap and shampoo and begin
to reap the benefits.
Things You'll Need
Sharp knife
Double boiler
Glycerin soap base
Metal spoons
2 tsp. hemp oil
2 tsp. essential oil of your choice (optional)
Soap fragrance (optional)
Soap molds
Rubbing alcohol
Spray bottle
Bowl
Liquid castile soap
Plastic bottles
Making Hemp Soap
Fill the bottom pot of a double boiler halfway with water. Place it on the
stove top and set it so that it will heat to a low simmer. While it warms
up, you can prepare the soap.
Place your glycerin soap base on the counter. With a sharp knife, chop enough
small pieces to fill four cups.
Place the chopped soap pieces in the top pot of the double boiler. Place the top
pot on the bottom pot and allow the pieces to melt slowly. Stir very gently and
only occasionally. Stirring too much or too fast will leave bubbles in your soap.
When the soap is almost melted, remove the top pot and place it on the counter.
Stir the mixture slowly until it is completely melted.
Add 2 tsp. of hemp oil and blend it into the soap mixture. If you choose to add
fragrance, add it a few drops at a time until the desired scent is achieved.
Typically, you will only need about 3 to 4 drops to create a light, fresh scent.
Stir gently until your soap is well blended.
Pour the soap into the soap molds, filling them to the top. With a spray bottle
filled with rubbing alcohol, lightly spritz the tops of the poured soaps. This
will hinder bubble development.
Set the soap molds aside and allow the soap to set for 24 hours. Once the soap
is hard, turn over the molds and pop the soaps out. If they don't pop out easily,
place the molds in the freezer for about 20 minutes. This will cause the edges of
the soap bars to shrink and make them easier to pop out of the molds.
Making Hemp Shampoo
Pour 2 cups of liquid castile soap into a bowl.
Add 2 tsp. of hemp oil and blend well. If you choose to add other essential oils,
add 2 tsp. of each and blend well. You can add more if more fragrance, if desired.
Pour the shampoo into your bottles and seal the caps tight. Shake well and let
them sit for 24 hours before use. Shake gently before each use to blend the oils
through the shampoo.
Tips & Warnings
If you wish to add other essential oils to your soap or shampoo, green tea and
lemongrass are both nice complements to hemp oil.
If you're not going to use your soap immediately, wrap it securely in plastic
to preserve its scent and color.
Homemade shampoo has a shelf life of about one year.
Do not allow your soap to reach a boiling point on the stove. Extreme heat will
destroy the glycerin and moisturizing elements.
Use only scents specifically made for soap-making. Other types of scents could
irritate your skin or cause an allergic reaction.

SECTION 4
LYE
SAFETY
PRECAUTIONS
The list is fairly short and mostly common sense. There's no way
to make it interesting, but read through it anyway. Becoming
familiar with these lye and lye/water safety precautions will make
your soap projects rewarding, not painful.
1. Lye is a caustic and poisonous so treat it with care.
2. Be careful not to inhale the dust when working and work in a
well-ventilated area. Soapmaking is easiest if you have quick
access to the stove and sink, making the kitchen the ideal work
area. Use the exhaust hood when mixing lye or mix lye outside.
3. Have adequate space to work on. Protect all work surfaces.
Lye can "redesign" your kitchen!
4. Wear protective goggles and rubber gloves, long sleeve shirts
and close fitting clothing; protect your feet, no sandals.
5. Lye corrodes metal so remove all jewelry before making soap.
6. If you accidentally get lye on your skin, flush the area with
ordinary vinegar and wash well with soap and water. (Lye will feel
slippery on skin.) Lye in the eye necessitates a visit to the
emergency room.
7. Do not leave the area unattended. If you're tired or short of
time, leave soapmaking for another day.
8. When mixing lye with water, always add lye to the water, not
the other way around. Pour it carefully in a steady stream.
9. Do not place bowls/pots near the edge of the counter.
10. Never reuse lye containers, stirring spoons or molds for other
purposes.
11. Do not attempt to heat lye in microwave or on the stove.
12. Children and pets should be kept away from the work area until
all equipment has been cleaned and put away.
13. Let soap cure undisturbed - away from children and pets.
