SECTION 1
MENOPAUSE
Menopause is a term used to describe the
permanent cessation of the primary functions
of the human ovaries: the ripening and release
of ova and the release of hormones that cause
both the creation of the uterine lining and
the subsequent shedding of the uterine lining
(a.k.a. the menses or the period). Menopause
typically (but not always) occurs in women in
midlife, during their late 40s or early 50s,
and signals the end of the fertile phase of a
woman's life.
The transition from reproductive to non-reproductive
is the result of a major reduction in female hormonal
production by the ovaries. This transition is normally
not sudden or abrupt, tends to occur over a period of
years, and is a natural consequence of aging. However,
for some women, the accompanying signs and effects that
can occur during the menopause transition years can
significantly disrupt their daily activities and sense
of well-being. In addition, women who have some sort of
functional disorder affecting the reproductive system
(e.g., endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, cancer
of the reproductive organs) can go into menopause at a
younger age than the normal timeframe. The functional
disorders often significantly speed up the menopausal
process and create more significant health problems,
both physical and emotional, for the affected woman.
Menopause can be officially declared (in an adult woman
who is not pregnant, is not lactating, and who has an
intact uterus) when there has been amenorrhea (absence
of any menstruation) for one complete year. However,
there are many signs and effects that lead up to this
point, many of which may extend well beyond it too.
These include:
irregular menses,
vasomotor instability
(hot flashes,
and night sweats),
atrophy of genitourinary
tissue,
increased stress,
breast tenderness,
vaginal dryness,
forgetfulness,
mood changes,
in certain cases osteoporosis
and/or heart disease.
These effects are related to the hormonal changes
a woman’s body is going through, and they affect
each woman to a different extent. The only sign
or effect that all women universally have in
common is that by the end of the menopause
transition every woman will have a complete
cessation of menses.

SECTION 2
MENOPAUSE
SIGNS
Menopause is a natural part of the aging process;
it marks the end of fertility in a woman’s life.
Menopause may occur naturally anytime between the
ages of 40 to 65, but here in the US the average
age of menopause is 52 years old.
There are some occasions when menopause may occur
before the age of 40 years old, if this occurs, it
is considered a premature or early menopause and is
outside medical norms. Medical conditions, genetic
disorders, surgery or medical treatments are all
things that may lead to or cause early menopause.

SECTION 3
PERIMENOPAUSE
Perimenopause is the phase leading up menopause,
it may last anywhere from a few months to ten
years.
The symptoms associated with perimenopause are the
same as menopause signs. Perimenopause ends when
menopause is reached and then after menopause a
woman is said to be postmenopausal.
Once menopause is reached, menopause signs will
diminish and eventually disappear altogether;
this may take a few years or happen suddenly.

The early stages of menopause can lead to
some very real physical symptoms.
Diminishing ovarian function, one of the
early stages of menopause, can lead to
some very real physical symptoms. Most
women will experience at least some of
these symptoms, no matter what their age.
They can last for years, as hormone levels
fall and fluctuate. The severity of the
symptoms often depends on how gradual or
sudden the changes are.

HOT
FLASHES
Hot flashes are sudden feelings of warmth, which are usually most
intense over the face, neck and chest. Your skin might redden, as
if you're blushing. Hot flashes can also cause sweating, and if you
lose too much body heat, you might feel chilled afterward.
Although other medical conditions can cause them, hot flashes most
commonly are due to menopause — the time when menstrual periods become
irregular and eventually stop. In fact, hot flashes are the most common
symptom of the menopausal transition.
How often hot flashes occur varies among women and can range from a
few a week to several an hour. There are a variety of treatments for
particularly bothersome hot flashes.

SECTION 8
MALE
MENOPAUSE
What is Male Menopause?
Male menopause, also called andropause, refers
to a gradual decline in a man's testosterone
levels. Not all men will go through andropause
and it is unknown why those that will, do.
Testosterone is the male sex hormone that is
responsible for creating and releasing sperm,
initiating sex drive and providing muscular
strength.
Hormone levels tend to peak around the ages of
15 to 18 in most males. Sometime during his mid
to late 20s, a man's hormone levels will begin
to drop slowly. Usually, these hormone levels
will remain at a healthy level, but some men
will see their testosterone levels drop
significantly by the time they are 40. By age
50, half of all men will experience a significant
reduction in testosterone levels, causing a
variety of uncomfortable ailments.
Causes of Male Menopause
Male menopause can occur naturally in some men.
More often than not, though, andropause is
triggered by illness, depression, dementia, and
obesity. Certain diseases that attack the heart
and lungs also seem to affect the production of
testosterone.
Men who have had autoimmune diseases or cancer
seem to be at an increased risk for low
testosterone levels.
Andropause vs. Menopause
Menopause in men is not entirely similar to
female menopause. Female menopause involves
the complete decline of sex hormones. During
menopause, your estrogen levels will decrease
and then disappear, causing acute symptoms
and the complete loss of fertility. Men will
never lose their fertility completely during
andropause.
Testosterone will continue to be produced, as
will sperm, permitting a man to have children
well into his 80s. For this reason, there is
much debate over whether this testosterone
drop should be referred to as the male
"menopause."
What are the Symptoms
of Male Menopause?
Male menopause symptoms are very similar to
those experienced by women during menopause,
only much less intense. Common menopause
symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats,
fatigue, muscle and joint aches. Men also
suffer from emotional symptoms like mood
swings, irritability, depression, and
listlessness.
Treatment Options
Men often do not seek treatment for andropause.
A lot of men feel uncomfortable speaking about
their symptoms and, in the past, doctors haven't
taken men's menopause seriously.
signs of menopause in men can also be difficult
to diagnose. Thanks to new studies, though,
doctors have become more aware of this problem
and are beginning to realize the importance of
treatment.
The primary treatment for andropause is Testosterone
Replacement Therapy (TRT). Like estrogen replacement
in women, testosterone replacement aims to bring
hormonal levels back up to a healthy level. Once
testosterone levels are increased, most men begin
to experience fewer symptoms.
Unfortunately, testosterone replacement doesn't
always work well to combat erectile dysfunction.
Because this is such a severe symptom for most men,
other treatments for erectile dysfunction should be
investigated.
