SECTION 1
OPEN
SOURCE
INITIATIVE
OSI
Open Source Initiative (OSI) is a
non-profit corporation dedicated
to managing and promoting the Open
Source Definition for the good of
the community, specifically through
OSI Certified Open Source Software
certification mark and program.
The basic idea behind open source
is very simple:
When programmers can read,
redistribute, and modify
the source code for a piece
of software, the software
evolves.
People improve it,
people adapt it,
people fix bugs.
And this can happen at a speed that,
if one is used to the slow pace
of the conventional software
development, seems astonishing.

FREE
SOFTWARE
DEFINITION
Software that fits the Free software
definition may be more appropriately
called free software.
The GNU project in particular objects
to their works being referred to as
"open source.

SECTION 3
PUBLIC
DOMAIN
Public domain comprises the body
of knowledge and of innovation
(especially creative works such
as writing, art, music, and
inventions) in relation to which
no person or other legal entity
can establish or maintain
proprietary interests within a
particular legal jurisdiction.
This body of information and creativity
is considered to be part of a common
cultural and intellectual heritage,
which, in general, anyone may use or
exploit, whether for commercial or
non-commercial purposes.
Only about 15 percent of all books are
in the public domain, and 10 percent of
all books are still in print.
If an item ("work") is not in the public
domain, this may be the result of a
proprietary interest such as a copyright,
patent, or other sui generis right.

FREE
SOFTWARE
FOUNDATION
FSF
The Free Software Foundation (FSF),
established in 1985, is dedicated
to promoting computer users' rights
to use, study, copy, modify, and
redistribute computer programs.
The FSF promotes the development and
use of free software, particularly
the GNU operating system, used widely
in its GNU/Linux variant.

SECTION 5
THE
GNU
PROJECT
The GNU Project was launched in
1984 to develop a complete
Unix-like operating system which
is free software:
the GNU system. Variants of the GNU
operating system, which use the
kernel called Linux, are now widely
used;
though these systems are often referred
to as “Linux”, they are more accurately
called GNU/Linux systems.
What is Free Software?
“Free software” is a matter
of liberty, not price.
To understand the concept, you should
think of “free” as in “free speech”,
not as in “free beer”.
Free software is a
matter of the users'
freedom to run,
copy,
distribute,
study,
change,
improve the software.
More precisely, it refers
to four kinds of freedom,
for the users of the
software:
The freedom to run the program,
for any purpose.
The freedom to study how the
program works, and adapt it
to your needs. Access to the
source code is a precondition
for this.
The freedom to redistribute copies
so you can help your neighbor.
The freedom to improve the program,
and release your improvements to
the public, so that the whole
community benefits.
Access to the source code is a
precondition for this.

THE
APACHE
SOFTWARE
FOUNDATION
The Apache Software Foundation
provides support for the Apache
community of open-source
software projects.
The Apache projects are characterized
by a collaborative, consensus based
development process, an open and
pragmatic software license, and a
desire to create high quality software
that leads the way in its field.
We consider ourselves not simply a group
of projects sharing a server, but rather
a community of developers and users.

LINUX
OPERATING
SYSTEM
Linux is an operating system that
was initially created as a hobby
by a young student, Linus Torvalds,
at the University of Helsinki in
Finland.
Linus had an interest in Minix, a
small UNIX system, and decided to
develop a system that exceeded the
Minix standards.
The kernel, at the heart of all Linux
systems, is developed and released
under the GNU General Public License
and its source code is freely available
to everyone.
It is this kernel that forms the base
around which a Linux operating system
is developed.

SECTION 8
PERL
Perl is Open Source software. You
can download it for free as a source
code or as a pre-compiled binary
distribution.
Perl is the Swiss Army chainsaw of
scripting languages: powerful and
adaptable.
It was first developed by Larry Wall,
a linguist working as a systems
administrator for NASA in the late
1980s, as a way to make report
processing easier.
Since then, it has moved into
a large number of roles:
automating system administration,
acting as glue between different
computer systems;
and, of course, being one of the
most popular languages for CGI
programming on the Web.
