RECYCLING
Recycling is the reprocessing of
those used materials that would
otherwise become waste in order
to break them down and remake
them into new products.
REUSE:
Reuse is the putting of an item
to another use after its original
function has been fulfilled.
There are two types
of re-use possible:
1. Conventional reuse:
where the product is used a number
of times for the same function before
becoming obsolete or unusable.
2. New life reuse:
Where a new use is found for the item
Reuse has certain potential advantages
which can be summarised:
Energy and raw materials savings:
Replacing many single trip products
with one re-usable one reduces the
need for manufacture of new products.
3. Reduced disposal needs and costs.
Cost savings for business and consumers
as reusable products need less frequent
replacement than single trip products.
Present new market opportunities,
e.g. refillable products.
Disadvantages:
They require an infrastructure
including transport, which may lead
to environmental costs.
Practical difficulties in
collecting and cleaning.
Increased materials use, have
to produce more durable products.
Reduced market opportunities
for disposable products.
Waste management:
The collection,
transport,
processing (waste treatment),
recycling or disposal of waste
materials, usually ones produced
by human activity, in an effort
to reduce their effect on human
health or local aesthetics or
amenity.
A subfocus in recent decades has
been to reduce waste materials'
effect on the natural world and
the environment and to recover
resources from them.
Waste management can involve solid,
liquid or gaseous with the different
methods and the fields of expertise
for each.
The process of extracting resources
or value from waste is variously
referred to as secondary resource
recovery, recycling, and other terms.
ANAEROBIC DIGESTION:
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is the process
of the breakdown of organic matter by
anaerobic organisms in environments
lacking oxygen.
Anaerobic digesters use the natural
process of anaerobic digestion to
treat waste, produce renewable energy
or both.
MECHANICAL
BIOLOGICAL
TREATMENT:
Mechanical biological treatment are
able to sort the recyclable elements
of the waste out before biological
treatment by either:
COMPOSTING:
Compost is the decomposed remnants
of organic materials (those with
plant and animal origins).
Compost is used in gardening and
agriculture as a soil amendment,
and commercially by the landscaping
and container nursery industries.
It is also used for erosion control,
land/stream reclamation, wetland
construction, and as landfill cover.
ANAEROBIC DIGESTION:
This system breaks down manure solids
through biological fermentation in an
oxygen-free environment to produce
biogas.
BIODRYING:
This composting process uses the heat
generated in aerobic decomposition of
manure to dry a manure/compost mix with
forced air.
Ideally, dry compost is recycled as the
amendment to create the manure/compost
mix.
