SECTION 1
GARDEN
A garden is a planned space, usually outdoors,
set aside for the display, cultivation, and
enjoyment of plants and other forms of nature.
The garden can incorporate both natural and
man-made materials. The most common form today
is known as a residential garden, but the term
garden has traditionally been a more general
one.
Zoos, which display wild animals in simulated
natural habitats, were formerly called
zoological gardens. Western gardens are almost
universally based on plants, with garden often
signifying a shortened form of botanical garden.

SECTION 2
COMMUNITY
GARDENING
A community garden is a single piece of
land gardened collectively by a group
of people.
Community gardens provide fresh produce
and plants as well as:
satisfying labor,
neighborhood improvement,
sense of community and
connection to the environment.
They are publicly functioning in terms
of ownership, access, and management,
as well as typically owned in trust by
local governments or not for profit
associations.
A city’s community gardens can be as
diverse as its gardeners. Some grow
only flowers, others are nurtured
communally and their bounty shared,
some have individual plots for
personal use, while others have
raised beds for disabled gardeners.
Community gardens may help alleviate
one effect of climate change, which
is expected to cause a global decline
in agricultural output, making fresh
produce increasingly unaffordable.
Community gardens encourage an urban
community's food security, allowing
citizens to grow their own food or
for others to donate what they have
grown.

SECTION 3
ELEMENTS
For all their diversity, however, most
community gardens share at least four
elements in common:
In many ways community gardens are
re-enforcing basic human instincts
that are slowly deteriorating due
to the convenience of modern life.
land (or a place
to grow something)
plantings
gardeners
some sort of organizing
arrangements.
Land for a community garden can be
publicly or privately held. One
strong tradition in American
community gardening in urban areas
is cleaning up abandoned vacant
lots and turning them into
productive gardens.
Alternatively, community gardens
can be seen as a health or
recreational amenity and included
in public parks, similar to ball
fields or playgrounds.
Historically, community gardens
have also served to provide food
during wartime or periods of
economic depression.

SECTION 4
COMMUNAL
GARDEN
A communal garden:
(often used in the plural as communal gardens)
is a normally formal garden for shared use by
a number of local residents, typically in an
urban setting. The term is especially used in
the United Kingdom.
The centre of many city squares and crescents
(e.g., especially in London) are maintained
as communal gardens.
Despite the name, and the fact that they
typically look like a small public park,
such gardens are normally privately by
jointly owned, with sharing of maintenance
costs.
Access may be restricted by locked gates,
with keys available for residents, or only
unlocked during daytime. They are often
surrounded by tall railings designed to
keep people out.

AGRICULTURAL
GRANTS
Agricultural gardens account for an estimated 15 percent of the
world’s food supply, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Community agricultural gardens appear in cities on rooftops and
balconies, in vacant lots and park areas and on farmlands as grazing
fields for livestock. Agricultural gardening grants provide communities
and neighborhoods with the means for creating self-sustaining sources
of nutritional food.
Community Gardens
Community garden projects can serve different purposes within different
environments. In low-income areas and neighborhoods, community gardens
provide a low-cost source of nutritional foods and promote bonding and
partnerships between people in neighborhoods. In city and suburban
environments, community gardens help maintain open spaces and create
environmentally friendly resources that nourish the surrounding soil,
air and water. According to the Municipal Research and Services Center
of Washington (the state), public agencies, such as schools, universities
and parks and recreation departments, often initiate community agricultural
projects. Neighborhood associations and community development programs also
contribute to agricultural projects within neighborhoods and communities.
America the Beautiful Fund
Founded in 1965, the America the Beautiful Fund provides free plant and
vegetable seeds to community-based programs that wish to develop natural
environments within their communities. As a nonprofit organization, the
America the Beautiful Fund salvages seed and bulb materials intended for
landfill disposal. Through the program, free seed materials have been used
to grow an estimated 1.75 billion pounds of food for those in need and
contributed to the beautification of neighborhoods, parks and roadways
throughout the United States. Interested parties can obtain an application
at the America the Beautiful Fund website.
Captain Planet Foundation
The Captain Planet Foundation grew out of the Captain Planet cartoon
series from the 1990s, which sought to educate and entertain children
about environmental issues. As of 2001, the foundation is a public,
nonprofit charitable organization that supports environmental awareness
issues. The foundation offers grant assistance for hands-on, environmental
projects that involve children and young people. Eligible projects are those
that encourage children to participate in activities that address global
warming, the greenhouse effects and toxic waste issues within their communities.
Eligible applicants include public schools and nonprofit organizations. Grant
awards range from $250 to $2,500. Interested parties can apply at the foundation’s
website.
Community Food Projects Competitive Grants Program
Through the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the federal government
provides grants to community agricultural gardens in the Community Food Projects
Competitive Grants Program. Grant monies target low-income communities that are
willing to take an active role in developing self-sustaining food resources.
Eligible initiatives include urban gardening projects and rural farming projects
that produce healthy foods using natural agricultural methods. The maximum grant
award is $300,000. Interested parties can apply for assistance through the federal
government's Grants website.
