SECTION 1
MULTICULTURAL
Multiculturalism is the idea that modern
societies should embrace and even include
distinct cultural groups with equal social
status.
Whether or not cultural groups should have
distinct political status is a contested
issue among political scientists.
Some nations have adopted official policies
of multiculturalism, but the norm is varying
conditions of cultural diversity accompanied
by greater or lesser degrees of tolerance and
acceptance.
The term "multiculturalism" or multicultural
is also used to describe demographic conditions
of cultural and ethnic diversity where it occurs,
whether or not it is officially supported by
state policy.

SECTION 3
CROSS-CULTURAL
SUCCESS
Cross-cultural Success:
How can we build good working
relationships across cultures?
How can I avoid offending people
from a different culture?
When I travel abroad, should I
adapt to "their" culture?
If so, how far?
Why do different nationalities
seem to behave differently in
meetings?
Is cultural stereotyping or
cultural generalization harmful,
or helpful?
How can I get different cultures
to work to a common deadline?
Why do some cultures always seem
to want to rush in to things?
Why do some nationalities seem to
take forever to agree anything?
Would we be more effective, or less,
if our team were all the same
nationality?
How can we ensure that the needs and
views of each country are considered,
without adding weeks to each project?
Why do I sometimes get the answer "Yes",
when they really mean "No"?
How can I best influence someone from
another culture?
How can we improve the effectiveness of
our business as we face the increasing
"global" challenges, which will require
international co-operation?
When is it not "culture" and when is
culture used as an excuse?

SECTION 4
TRANSCULTURATION
In simple terms, it reflects the natural
tendency of people, to resolve conflicts
over time, rather than exacerbating them.
In the modern context, both conflicts and
resolutions are amplified by communication
and transportation technology —the ancient
tendency of cultures drifting or remaining
apart has been replaced by stronger forces
for bringing societies together.
Where tranculturation impacts ethnicity and
ethnic issues the term "ethnoconvergence"
is sometimes used.
In one general sense,
transculturation covers:
war,
ethnic conflict,
racism,
multiculturalism,
cross-culturalism,
interracial marriage,
and any other of a number
of contexts that deal with
more than one culture.
In the other general sense, tranculturation
is the positive aspect of global phenomena
and human events, and where resolutions to
conflicts are inevitable.

SECTION 5
CULTURAL
DIVERSITY
Cultural diversity is the variety
of human societies or cultures in
a specific region, or in the world
as a whole.
As well as the more obvious cultural
differences that exist between peoples,
such as language, dress and traditions,
there are also significant variations
in the way societies organise themselves,
in their shared conception of morality,
and in the ways they interact with their
environment.

SECTION 6
MULTICULTURAL
EDUCATION
"Multicultural education is a field
of study and an emerging discipline
whose major aim is to create equal
educational opportunities for the
students from:
diverse racial,
ethnic,
social-class,
cultural groups.
One of its important goals is to help
all students to acquire the knowledge,
attitudes, and skills needed to function
effectively in a pluralistic democratic
society and to interact, negotiate, and
communicate with peoples from diverse
groups in order to create a civic and
moral community that works for the common
good."
"Multicultural education not only draws
content, concepts, paradigms, and theories
from specialized interdisciplinary fields
such as ethnic studies and women studies
(and from history and the social and
behavioral sciences),
it also interrogates,
challenges,
reinterprets content,
concepts,
paradigms,
from the
established
disciplines.
Multicultural education applies content
from these fields and disciplines to
pedagogy and curriculum development in
educational settings.

SECTION 7
IMMIGRATION
Immigration is the movement of people
from one nation-state to another. While
human migration has existed throughout
human history, immigration implies
long-term permanent residence (and often
eventual citizenship) by the immigrants:
tourists and short-term visitors are not
considered immigrants.
Illegal immigration refers to immigration
across national borders in a way that
violates the immigration laws of the
destination country.

INTERCULTURAL
Interculturalism is the philosophy of
exchanges between cultural groups within
a society.
Various states have intercultural policies
which seek to encourage the socialization
of citizens of different origins.
Interculturalism requires an inherent openness
to be exposed to the culture of the "other".
Interculturalism seeks to enhance fusion by
looking for commonalities.
